Music

At Gamlingay Village College, all students receive a one hour music lesson a week which encompasses a range of musical aspects including composition, performance, listening and evaluating.  Students cover a variety of engaging topics throughout the year such as film music, graphic scores, pop music and influences from the Caribbean which allow students to engage in the curriculum in a practical and theoretical way, exploring diverse sounds and creating music as a class, in groups or individually.  Through the curriculum students will appreciate the diverse forms of music and the emotions that can be created.  Students will use their musical knowledge and new skills to create musical ideas, evaluate and build on them to engage their audience or fulfil a particular need.

Through music, social and communication skills are able to flourish as well as their ability to appraise the performances of themselves as well as that of others.

We are very fortunate to have a very experienced and talented team of peripatetic teachers who work alongside the music teachers to offer a different way of exploring music through a particular instrument.  Instrumental lessons on offer at Gamlingay include: violin, cello, oboe, guitar, flute, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone.  Students then have the opportunity to take the Associated Board music exams in their various instruments as well as sharing their talents in school assemblies and concerts, festivals, and national competitions.

Our school choir has been successful for a number of years in the Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year competition reaching the semi-finals on various occasions and representing the school with pride and enthusiasm.  Other extra-curricular activities on offer to students that help support the curriculum are vocal group and marimba group.

Should your child wish to have music lessons with our fantastic peripatetic teachers, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Allen and she will be happy to help you.  Alternatively, you may find more information on the Inspiring Music website, click on their logo below.
