Who are the Friends of Gamlingay Village College?

The Friends of Gamlingay Village College is a parent and teacher association (PTA), but is open to any family member, friend or member of the local community who has the interest of the school at heart. As it is a PTA, every parent with pupils at GVC and every teacher is automatically a member. It is run by a voluntary committee, and each person contributes only as much  time and skill as they have available.

Our main aim is to raise funds for the school to spend on items which would otherwise be unaffordable. These may be educational trips, activities within school or items for use in school.

We have a full constitution which is available on request and are registered with the Charity Commission.

Charity Number: 1052836

As a registered charity we are able to apply for grants from private companies, grant making trusts and apply for lottery funding.

How do we raise money?

We have set up a structure of fund raising activities which run on a regular basis, so that parents and carers know what will be coming up in the future. These include regular cake sales, bag2school clothing collections and a raffle of Christmas hampers. In addition, we organise a range of fun activities for children and families. Please have a look at our most recent newsletter.

We also provide refreshments at school events for a small charge or for donations.

How do we spent the money we raise?

Any money raised, is banked with the Friends. At each meeting we consider any requests for money that staff have submitted. We discuss how funds should be spent and all decisions are noted in the minutes of our meetings. We welcome suggestions from all parents and where possible we like the funds to benefit all pupils.

The Committee

Our constitution requires us to have four officers: Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. We have a number of committee members who attend meetings, which are usually once every half term, who help make decisions, organise activities and provide suggestions.

We arrange committee meetings to suit those attending and inform our friends of dates and events via  texts by the school office.

How can you get involved?

Obviously, the more people who get involved, the more things we can achieve. Not only is the burden on each person reduced, but more ideas and a wider range of skills make for better events.

There are many ways that you can help and some are listed below. This is not an exclusive list and you may be able to help in ways that we haven’t thought of.

  • Baking cakes and sending your child with money on cake sale days
  • Buying raffle tickets
  • Collecting Community Points from the Chronicle
  • Donations towards the Christmas Hampers
  • Helping with refreshments at events
  • Selling raffle tickets
  • Suggesting ideas for events and activities
  • Helping to organise events and activities
  • Liaising with the press and marketing our events
  • Joining the committee

In particular, if you have any experience with applications for grants your help would be very much appreciated!

Annual General Meeting

This is held in Autumn. It is usually held after a Parents evening. All parents are welcome to come along and hear how we have fared over the previous year. New committee members are elected at this occasion.
