2017.07.07: Letter from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers

SATS Results 2017
All Year 6 pupils have now been given their SAT results and we are delighted that there is so much to celebrate! Full details are below, but the really pleasing thing for us is that every single student has results that they can be proud of. Congratulations to all Year 6 pupils and thank you to parents, staff and the rest of our wonderful students who have supported the Year 6’s so well during the course of the year.

We are once again celebrating some incredibly successful outcomes and the key headline is that we have improved on our great 2016 results in every element of the assessments. In Mathematics and Writing students have achieved exceptional results.  We are now above the national average in all of the accountability measures and although nationally there has been significant progress, GVC students have out- performed even the national improvement, substantially so in Writing and Mathematics.
Progress measures will not be released until September – but we would anticipate a further improvement in this area also. In 2016 our progress placed us in the top 25% nationally.
These achievements are testament to the great work of our students, staff and parents, who have approached the process with total positivity, dedication and a great sense of enjoyment in their learning.

We are also very pleased with just how well our high ability students have performed. 9% of our cohort achieved a high score (110+) across all elements of Reading, Writing and Maths.  The national average for this measure was 5% in 2016. We are awaiting data on the 2017 figure.
We also had 2 students who achieved the maximum possible score – a perfect 120 on an individual element of the tests.
In terms of the combined scores – In 2016 we achieved National Standard across Reading, Writing and Maths of 59%.
In 2017 we have improvescore further. This stands at 63% for GVC across Reading, Writing and Maths, which again is above the National Average.d this combined score further. This stands at 63% for GVC across Reading, Writing and Maths, which again is above the National Average.

Sports Day 2017
Thank you to all who supported our whole school sports day on the 4th July. This was a wonderful occasion and we enjoyed having so many parents for the afternoon races. We even managed great weather for the occasion; warm, no rain, but not too hot that pupils overheated – perfect.
It was a real pleasure to see just what a talented group of athletes that we have at the school and I am very proud of how our students display total support for one another whilst maintaining an atmosphere of healthy competition, another example of just what makes GVC such a wonderful school.
Once the results and records have been collected we will hold a special assembly in school to award certificates and present the winning house with the coveted school sports cup!
Thank you to Mrs Phillips for running such a great event and to all members of the wider school community who supported us. Thanks as ever to the Friends of GVC who made sure that refreshments were available on the day too. Photographs can be found on the website.

Competition Winner!
Stratton Upper School invited pupils from its feeder middle schools to design a bookmark to celebrate 20 years of Harry Potter. I am delighted to say that Koen in Year 6 was triumphant for GVC and his winning design can now be seen on the Stratton bookmarks. Koen has been presented with his prize and every student at GVC has been given a bookmark to help Koen celebrate his success. The winning design (featuring Latin inscription and some fabulous artwork) can be seen on the GVC website.

GVC Music Concert
Congratulations to all who performed in the summer music concert on Wednesday evening. The audience were treated to a wide range of musical pieces from the famous GVC Marimba band to some excellent individual performances.
The standard was incredibly high and thank you to Miss Allen, Miss Evans and Mr Ruzvidzo and all of our peripatetic music staff for arranging this concert. The last word must go to our incredibly talented musicians – you are an inspiration to all!
