2017.06.09: Letter from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers

A warm welcome back to the final half term of the year, and an exceptionally busy one, in which we will complete our academic reporting cycle and ensure that all pupils who are leaving us are supported in making the transition to their new schools.

Transition of Year 8 to Stratton Upper School
Senior staff from Stratton Upper School have visited Year 8 students this week and have seen them at break, lunchtimes and in lessons.  They commented on the positive attitude to learning shown in a science lesson and also how co-operative and supportive our Year 8 pupils are.  Subject teachers from Stratton Upper School will be delivering lessons in a range of subjects at GVC on the 26th June.
A reminder that the dates for the transition days at Stratton Upper School are 13th and 14th July 2017.  On these transition days, pupils can use the Gamlingay or Potton bus service to Stratton, details as follows:

Year 6 Transition to Comberton Village College

Transition staff from CVC have visited our Year 6 pupils who are leaving for Comberton at the end of this year.  The CVC induction days are 6th & 7th July and GVC pupils can use the existing bus arrangements for free.  The bus picks up at Gamlingay crossroads at 7.45am and from Potton Market Square at 7.35am.

Transition to other schools
Whilst there are not quite the same formalised transition arrangements with other schools, we will of course support all of our pupils who are moving on.  A reminder that transition days are as follows:
Bassingbourn Village College – 19th, 20th & 21st July
Potton Middle School – 29th & 30th June

Healthy Eating Week
Next week is National Healthy Eating week and we will be giving pupils some information regarding healthy eating.  One of the challenges is to replace “treat” style snacks with something healthy, and another is to try a new type of food.  I will include some information on our website, and if parents wish to encourage healthy eating at home, or plan a healthy lunchbox, there are resources to help you do so.

Staffing Arrangements at GVC from September 2017
Now that the deadline for teacher resignations has passed, I am pleased to provide information regarding staffing at GVC from September 2017.

Mrs Sherwood-Hulme, Mr Ruzvidzo, Mrs Phillips and Miss Allen will all transfer across to The Cam Academy Trust, who will be running GVC from September.  I know that they will be planning for a positive year ahead at the school and are very much looking forward to working with the pupils that will remain with us.  I am also pleased to announce that all of our support staff and teaching assistants will remain at GVC and will also be transferring to the new school.  Their work will be led by Chris Jukes, Executive Headteacher with The Cam Academy Trust.  The Cam Academy Trust are writing to parents separately to outline the provision that they are planning from September and will also detail the leadership arrangements for the new school.

I thank all of the staff that are leaving GVC at the end of term for their exceptional service to the school.  Mrs Abery is currently looking for teaching positions in an area closer to home.  Mrs Luck and Mrs Sunderland will retain roles within The Stratton Education Trust.  Mrs Luck as a Lead Practitioner in English (and she is also a Principal Moderator with an A level exam board) and Mrs Sunderland as Head of Art.  I know that many parents and students will love the opportunity of working with them again!  Miss Hankinson has been appointed Director of Mathematics at Sharnbrook Upper School in Bedford Borough and will take up this exciting new position in September.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform parents that I will also leave Stratton Education Trust this summer.  I am delighted to have been appointed as Headteacher of Wollaston School in Northamptonshire.  I am of course hugely proud of all that we have achieved together at Gamlingay Village College, in terms of our Ofsted success and also in terms of making our mission of “great outcomes for every child” a genuine reality.  With these successes in mind and the changes taking place between the Trusts, this very much felt like the right time to take on a new leadership role and I am looking forward to leading Wollaston School with the same values and purpose that have proved to be so successful here.

In the meantime, I will continue to work hard to ensure that we complete this academic year on a genuine high note and would like to thank all pupils, parents, governors and staff for their great support during my time at GVC.

Thank you as always for your support for Gamlingay Village College.  If there is anything you would like to discuss please do not hesitate to contact me via Nicola Richardson on the main school number or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Yours sincerely

James Birkett
